Cedar planks can be used in a huge variety of construction projects, and can help you make the most of one of the most useful and versatile of all natural materials. Red cedar is very rarely made into planks, and usually comes as paneling. It is the white cedar, which is grown in the northern states of the USA, which lends itself most naturally to being made into planks for fencing, decking, and use indoors.
Using white cedar planks as a construction material for the inside of a room makes perfect sense, as it can create a far more natural feel than most artificial furnishings. It also creates an air of lightness and space. There is no doubt that rooms with a light color appear to be larger than rooms of the same size which are in dark colors, even though the effect is obviously nothing more than an illusion. The planks are hard wearing enough to use as flooring, yet aesthetic enough to use as wall coverings.
Using white cedar planks outside will give you a good looking but hard wearing solution for your garden needs. Cedar is becoming ever more popular as a decking material, because it is extremely weather proof. It can withstand both the water of rainfall and the continuous mud deposits of people walking on top of it. Cedar decking has a lifespan of between ten and twenty years, depending on how well it is looked after, and how harsh the climate is. Continual freezing of the wood will cause it to age more quickly.
Cedar planks can also be used as fencing material, and if they are used in this way their life will be slightly longer. This is because fencing will not collect water as decking does, and because no-one walks on fencing depositing soil. Cedar fencing will be hard wearing in its natural state, but it can be made to last even longer with the application of stains and finishes. Some good stains will salter the color of the wood, while still leaving the natural texture and appearance. You simply have to decide how you want your fence to look. Applying an oil based stain will give the longest life to your cedar planks.
